Vivienne Westwood & Scottish Ballet… A Combination
The Vivienne Westwood boutique and Scottish Ballet hosted an enchanted evening of fizz, fashion, and a little fantasy. Fashionistas, photographers and friends came along to glance behind the scenes of Scottish Ballet’s latest production, Alice; an eccentric and edgy take on the classic fairy tale of Alice in Wonderland. In this adaptation Alice falls down the lens of a camera, taking the audience on ‘an extraordinary adventure into the depths of imagination’. Party guests peeked into the costume wardrobe of Alice, watched make up artists work their magic and meandered through the magnificent melange of Vivienne Westwood’s creations.
‘Naughty Alice’, Westwood’s new fragrance possesses a ‘mystical’ scent with mischievous undertones. The allure of the magic potion style bottle contributes to the allusion of temptation; elegantly intertwining the name and themes of Scottish Ballet’s production.
Company, an initiative launched by Scottish Ballet has teamed up with Vivienne Westwood to show that there is more to ballet than ‘tutus and tiaras’. Ballet is often considered a refined art, confined to society’s elite; but Scottish Ballet hopes to ‘shake things up’ and amplify appeal to creative characters everywhere. The affiliation, instantly challenges conventional conceptions of ballet as a conformist art and grants ballet the ‘edge’, courtesy of Westwood, it has been looking for. Company aspires to attract people in there 20s and 30s who have a passion for dance, music, photography or art. Showing the way this assortment of arts interrelates to compose a production and aspiring to appeal to everyone with an enthusiasm for creativity. Alissa Watson, manager of Vivienne Westwood in Glasgow said that Company, coincides and complements perfectly Westwood’s own campaign, Art Lovers Unite!-Get a Life.
Vivienne Westwood’s desire to rebel has always been portrayed in her designs and is arguably her greatest inspiration. Hailed as the inventor of ‘punk’, Westwood has never ceased to shock and startle; her experimentation with BDSM fashion and posing on the cover of Tatler magazine dressed as Margaret Thatcher convey she likes to cause a bit of a stir! She is no less, a revolutionary who has distinguished herself by employing fashion as a means to drive positive change, capture attention and direct it to the real issues of our world.
“I was messianic about punk, seeing if one could put a spoke in the system in some way”
Challenging conformity yet again, it is evident that Westwood’s rebellious nature and passion for challenging the status quo has prompted her new campaign. Summoning us from our sofas, Vivienne Westwood endeavours to promote ‘high culture’ bringing people to the forefront of art to engage their senses; instil inspiration; create a memory; interact with life and initiate a reaction. To obsess over popular culture is ‘just running around sucking things up…it’s a passive thing to do’ says Westwood who ‘lives in a little bubble, riding her bike around the centre of London’. She indulges in ‘high culture’ such as poetry, literature, theatre and art; refuting television and fashion magazines that contribute to the creation of a culture of conformity. Her inspiration stems from a fresh, organic appreciation and lifestyle of raw culture and art that dismisses the ‘artificial age’ of technology and gadgets that she believes sedate society from the richness, and realness life. Westwood’s mission is to inspire people to get out and jump into the world as to experience the fruits of artistic culture with all their senses.
