Podsickle#2 – Hideout Sessions by Part Time Heroes

I got introduced to this by my mate Dave. I know basically everyone has a mate Dave. DJ Dave, Dave the Rave – that kind of thing. But most Dave’s don’t help out their mates like this one did. So basically he got this mix and was like “Dude you have to listen to this” they’ve also got a podcast too which is “heavy”.

The mix was the Addict Mixtape by Part Time Heroes which did its job and got me addicted straight away. I then checked out their podcast – The Hideout Sessions. Basically I was hooked straight away. Now I’m not gonna gush too much about it, but the first few episodes I listened to still get a play on my iTunes even now. Purely for the reason of the standard of the music they contain. Each monthly offering is based on new music – a great place to keep your ear to the ground, without any expense.

Ross Wakefield and Toby Vane make up Part Time Heroes and began to create their own unique sound in 2005 before they realised their debut EP ‘Realise’. Next came their debut LP ‘Meanwhile….’ after the likes of Zane Lowe, Mr. Scruff and Gilles Peterson were fighting their corner. I’d urge anyone into deep jazz and melancholic soul to check this out and get ready for their upcoming album by following their LP blog on their website. They also remix all over the place and play some very wiggly soundsystem sets – for all those hitting up Croatia for Soundwave this summer, it’s one not to miss.

The Hideout Sessions gives a platform to other artists Ross and Toby have worked with and just all round good music. Favourite labels include the likes of Wah Wah 45s, Ninja Tune, Big Dada, Tru Thoughts and First Word. You can immediately imagine what kind of flavours appear in the podcasts, but this is diversity in its best form. UK Hip Hop, European Hip Hop, Soul, Jazz, Funk, Folk, Drum n Bass, Dubstep and Disco all feature.

Now this isn’t one of those podcasts that is all music. Obviously music is the focus, but Ross and Toby punctuate this with updates on what they are up to, interviews like the recent one with Laura Vane from the Vipertones and often little comedic interruptions. Not only is the music great, it’s actually pretty funny too.

Since listening to this podcast I’ve been introduced to the likes of Herma Puma, Jono McCleery, Lotek, James Blake, Bonobo and Quantic. I’ve got really heavily into the latter scouring his back catalogue and of course sharing this with my mate Dave.

And then we come to mixes. The Addict mixtape still gets a play, as does Volume 1 of Dance like No One’s Watching – a free mix released in February this year. Dance like No One’s Watching Volume Two has just been released in the last few days and is available from their soundcloud and mixcloud.

Their own mixes to one side, each Hideout Sessions episode (usually lasting just under two hours) contains a guest mix. The likes of Danny Drive Thru, Masters of Jazz and Herma Puma have all featured on this fairly recently and June’s mix from DJ Hoop was an awesome soul mix – something I just can’t stop listening to.

Available through iTunes and out every month – don’t let Dave down and check it out!
