REVIEW: FOREST FIRE – FUTURE SHADOWS
Whenever you hear people in the “biz” talking about Forest Fire you’re invariably going to hear a barrage of accompanying adjectives – “Arty” or “urban” or “experimental folk punk” or something along those lines. All of these terms are certainly pertinent, but one thing the New York quintet are rarely ever associated with is accessibility. Their lyrics are usually stuffed with obscure metaphor and are more often than not placed behind some kind of metronomic musical composition which seems intended to hypnotise rather than energise. ‘Future Shadows’ is a departure from this style. The first single from new album ‘Staring at The X’ is a simple pop song stripped bare. Mark Thresher’s echoing trill still harps on about nonsensical scenarios but the overall band sound is warmer and full of hope. It’s worth a listen if you like your indie thoughtful and inoffensive and don’t be surprised if ‘Future Shadows’ inspires you to help auld Mrs Andrews across the busy motorway with her Asda bags.
