Wednesd4ry: Journey to the Dark Side of Dubstep

“The kind of music we make can only be felt in its truest form when you have a huge sound system punching you in the chest. It’s not something you can appreciate on a little radio or on laptop speakers so it becomes a very sociable and personal style of music”

Based in South East London, Legend4ry, T4X and Melo gather up their vinyl each and every Wednesday and get together to deliver a live online show dedicated to exploring the deeper side of Dubstep. Born in October 2010, Wednesd4ry currently have a total of 71 shows often featuring special guest DJ’s such as Pressa, One R and Focus, just to name a few, and are currently available for listening pleasure on their website. Also branching out into the real world some of their recent appearances include the Deep Motion nights at the Bunker Club as well as playing Audio Doughnuts at Hidden Nightclub in London. Invited to the Wednesd4ry studio one evening, Trisickle writer Claudia Menting caught Legend4ry (aka Chris Gallienne) just before the show starts for the scoop on his Dubstepping lifestyle.

How do you select the pieces you use in your mixes?

Since I play vinyl 90% of the time I usually end up picking tracks that will go best with what I want to achieve during a certain set. I think being a vinyl DJ is great and often underestimated because you really have to think about what tunes to take along with you, unless you enjoy a sore back from lugging 50 vinyl in your record bag.

What kind of equipment do you use?

When I’m producing I personally just use FL Studio (Fruity Loops). I have tried experimenting with other software and hardware but I work writing lots of loops and use a lot of audio in my music so it’s perfect, really nothing gets the music flowing quite in the way I like it when using FL. Otherwise I use a MC-303 and SP-808 (thanks to Melo being charitable) and an Alesis keyboard.

Apart from Wednesd4ry have you released any of your own tracks?

I am a producer at heart so I much prefer sitting and crafting music opposed to playing it. I have had quite a few releases on multiple labels but the main ones I am putting music out on are Mindstep Music and Dubstrict Records which are both local labels in terms of where they are based in relation to me.

After about a year’s worth of Wednes4ry, do you have any big plans for it?

I personally have been wanting more “extra features” on the show, possibly getting some good video footage during our shows, maybe a type of mini documentary would be interesting in order to make it more of a brand as opposed to a radio show. It’s something we are still at a stage of discussing and throwing ideas around. Where our own music is concerned we are planning to collaborate on music together that will probably lead to releases thanks to some of our outside connections.

Do you feel you have changed much over the past year together?

The main change is that we’re finding ourselves more spread out and individually starting to do our own things. Personally I’m pushing myself into my music more. Melo is in a band with Glenn Tilbrook and is often away on tour whilst T4X is still deciding what direction to move forward in.
But having Wednesd4y for all of us is amazing since we are completely independent from any other radio stations. Once a week we broadcast for approximately 2 hours and play what we like and act how we want.
The beauty of the Internet generation is that it allows people like us to forge our own brand and identity as opposed to having to make connections for months or years to even get on the airwaves.

In your opinion what makes a good song and how do you try to achieve this in your music?

I try to create as well as play music which follows my little theory of ‘space, pace and bass’. This is my philosophy about music. It shouldn’t be cluttered, it should have a decent pace that makes you want to dance and it needs to be coated in sub bass.

What career would you consider if you couldn’t be a musician?

Possibly graphic design or some type of art centred career. I don’t think I could cope if I wasn’t creating ‘something’ in my day-to-day life.

Finally, what does Dubstep mean to you?

Dubstep is dance music where the music revolves around large amounts of deep sub bass. Despite what most people think – Dubstep isn’t just half step drums and a bass line; its one of the broadest and eclectic genres out there, so go and explore it!
